Tax-y MacTaxerson

I have to say it - I love my house. Sure it needs some minor work and yes we have dreams to make it the perfect house, but I love it. I just love pulling up onto our street and then parking in the driveway. I love walking in and seeing our things and our furniture. I love that all the stuff in the cupboards is ours and that this wonderful big closet is filled with our things. In fact all the closets have our stuff. Heck - we HAVE CLOSETS! That's a huge deal coming from an apartment that had a bedroom closet and nothing else.

Home ownership was the right thing.

James wasn't sure this was the best option. Figured if we waited in the economy we could've got an even better deal. But since moving in we found out that our townhouse is the largest one on the entire street. Others you would assume are the same are smaller by 100 square feet. (Nosy neighbour told me so it must be true.) Also the Canadian government is now looking at taxing house deals.

In a time when our economy is very unstable they've decided to tax more and more people. Gotta love their logic!

The truth about Zehrs

As some of you may know I work as a buyer for a living. The main thing that I buy is food. You'd think I get sick of it, but there is something about grocery stores that fascinates me. Many people can attest to my dream of working in a grocery store since I was a very little girl. I wanted to have a day job and then work at Zehrs in the evenings. Didn't seem that far off considering there were three different Zehrs in Cambridge - and now there are four. The head office was here in town and it would be a great possibility that I could work for the company.

Several years ago, the truth started to come to light that Zehrs was actually owned by Loblaws. Doing some research into this, it actually looks like Loblaws has owned the Zehrs Markets since 1963! A fact that astounds me as the head office for Zehrs was located in Hespeler for as long as I could remember. (Hespeler is a section of Cambridge - that's a story for another day.)

With Loblaws owning Zehrs, I wondered what else they owned and the truth of the whole deal surprised me. They have more than 1000 corporate and franchised stores in Canada.

They are the parent company to
  • Dominion
  • Atlantic Superstore
  • Fortinos
  • The Great Canadian Superstore
  • Provigo
  • No Frills
  • Independant Grocers
  • Value Mart
  • Save Easy
  • Loblaws
  • Maxi and Maxi & Cie

And we can't forget to mention PC Financial Services, Joe Fresh and Presidents Choice. It seems really crazy to have that many companies under one umbrella. But this is where it gets interesting. Loblaws is just the front. It's the name for the company that everyone knows. What they don't always know, that my Uncle Bob was kind enough to enlighten me, is that Loblaws is actually owned by The George Weston Company.

That company acts as a silent super power that no one really hears about. They hear about Loblaws but George Weston? What's that???

Let me enlighten you - the George Weston Company has been around for a really long time - since the 1880's in fact. They have two different factions in North America - Loblaws and Weston Foods. According to their website: Weston Foods is primarily engaged in the baking and dairy industries within North America. Loblaw is Canada’s largest food distributor and a leading provider of general merchandise, drugstore and financial products and services.

So basically Weston Foods makes the food that you want to eat, and Loblaws sells it. That makes them a huge player. It allows them to earn massive amounts of profit if they are the manufacturer and the distributor. You'd think that means we'd get discounts at the store level for bread - as this is the main item that I think of when thinking of Weston. mmmm... bread.

That is one thing that they do really well is run good bakeries in the Zehrs. James and I actually had the wedding cake we served our guests made by Zehrs. It was deliciously tasty. Now that they have stores with furniture, portrait studios, electronics, eyewear, florists and fresh foods - why go anywhere else? It appears that whatever they are doing, George Weston is being very smart about it.

Housewarming?

The past week has been a complete blur but I am happy to say we finally have internet - we finally have a phone and our house isn't looking nearly as cluttered as it once was. Sure there are certain areas that are a little unorganized but they will be ready in time for the housewarming.

Ah the housewarming...

Everyone has been bugging us to pick a date and a time. I know that you can't satisfy everyone when you throw a party as there will always be someone that can't come. Then there is the issue of the type of housewarming we want to throw. Do we want more of an afternoon drop in where people come and go or do we want to have a rip roaring time? Which is the best option? Do we want to have an open house that could potentially turn into a big party at night?

In my head I'm thinking of my mother and others that would probably like a more family friendly atmosphere. That makes me lean to more of a daytime event. As these people tend to be the ones that helped us move the most, I feel like we should really make them feel comfortable here.

But then I remember all those that were rooting and cheering for us when we bought the house - those planning dance parties in the rec room and the crazy times. Those sound like fun too but will I be walking around cleaning up after everyone - as I have been with James every day. Yep - I've turned into a maid.

My previous roommates can attest that I am not the best person for picking up after myself. I'm more likely to leave something on the counter than actually wash it up. I like to leave my laundry until the very end too and have lots of hampers to prove it. But I know that with this house I want it to look it's best at all times as you never know when someone's going to show up. Honestly - I'm so excited about the prospect of visitors that I really don't mind cleaning up. Also - I want our house to look it's best to everyone.

This is why I've been frantically trying to get all of our things put away. I'm going include some pictures so you can see some of the finished product. Enjoy!

An Insomniacs House Dreams

With the move only a few short days away, I have become a complete insomniac!

I'm sure all new homeowners go through the same jitters - the excitement, the nervousness and complete ball of energy that seems to be completely under the surface. In my head I'm making list after list and imagining where all our things will go and how I want to lay things out when we move.

We were to go for our final house showing last night but something happened where the sellers agent couldn't locate the keys. A pain but at least we got in tonight. I was so happy to get there early and look around at the curb appeal of our property. It's funny how many big dreams that I have! I'd love to plant some gorgeous flowers along the front walk and I'd love to lengthen the walkway to lead all the way to the sidewalk. It'll give more space to park and allow space to walk by the cars without walking on the grass. Also - it will just bring a more cohesive look to the front of the house. Brilliant idea don't you think?

James and I were so happy to see the agent pull up in her now familiar black automobile. Smiling - she had the keys in hand and in we went. I tested all the faucets and opened all the cupboards. There was just something about having the people still in the house that prevented me from really looking deeper at things. I knew that I liked the house and the layout and that it was what I wanted. I could live with small things. Well today I went through the small things and did a little inventory of things I'd like to do to improve the house.

First thing I'd love to do is try and steam clean the carpets. I noticed there was a stain on the main floor carpet and that the carpet leading to the basement is a little dirty where there is a clear footpath. The stain in the living room I hadn't noticed before as it was cleverly hidden under their table. With all their furniture gone it was clear as day. I know we'd eventually like to replace the carpet, but we'll go with the steam cleaning for now.

I also discovered that I have a very strong disdain for the sconces in the basement. At least I'm not alone. James is with me! We ended up checking out Canadian Tire after and sure enough - they had our sconces, and only one we really liked. Problem is - it's over our budget to replace them all. guess it can wait!

The kitchen cupboards have really nice brushed metal knobs. Better than I remembered so that means that we can save on replacing them. Yay! Score one for the home team!

They did leave the shelves in the garage and the big mirror in the bathroom too. that was a plus. I did worry they'd disappear and we'd have to replace them. But they did take the shelving in the cold storage room. We didn't ask for it, so really what can we expect right?

Unfortunately we will need to repaint. We really didn't want to, but it appears that in their effort to get items out of the basement, they scraped the walls pretty badly. We can work with it for a few weeks, but have already started talking about what colour we'd like to paint.

All in all the visit was great and it made us even more excited. We opted to stop into Canadian Tire afterwards for their big spend $40 get $10 in Canadian Tire money sale. We knew that we'd need a few things so we picked up some laundry detergent and some Bounce sheets. Even scooped up a Swiffer Wet Jet. Our friends have one and they seem to really love it - so we figured - why not? We also got one of those things things for the bottom of your rain spout. We noticed that ours on the front of the house was cracked and broken so we picked up another one. James found a clock that he loved and I could tell that he wanted it. I told him to put it in the cart. It felt good to be doing regular things for our house rather than dreaming of it.

Hard to believe it's really almost here!

Of life and death and all points in between - all in one weekend - geesh!

This weekend is nuts.

As many of you can tell by my ticker - we are getting the keys to our house on Friday. That's 5 days from now!!! This means we need to finish up our packing and getting things done. I feel that we are in good shape and with me being so busy this weekend - James has truly been able to focus without getting distracted my me and my multitude of questions. (Trust me - when I was packing for the past three months it was best when he was otherwise occupied.)

But as this is crunchtime, you'd think we could focus on that. Unfortunately - life had other plans.

Friday we were invited to a birthday party - that's fabulous. Great guy and his fiancee is super nice. We would've loved to have gone but had to bow out due to the packing situation. We instead finished packing up the office and felt really good for doing so.

Saturday afternoon I attended a wedding shower after stopping to visit my very dear neice that unfortunately broke her nose on Friday and was in need of a friendly face. My cousin Amanda is getting married and I had the joy of seeing some of her family that I hadn't seen in years. Oddly enough - she recieved multiple duplicate gifts including three salad spinners, three pizza cooking stones and a bakers pizza rack as well as few pairs of oven mitts. By the end it was incredibly comical.

After the shower I went to visit my nephew Kamryn. It was his 11th birthday and for the morning he had been paintballing. A few nice bruises later and he was home smiling and dreaming of getting his own paintball gun. He was pretty excited.

I came home from there - packed more bags and got ready to go out - as we were going to an Engagement Dinner for our best man and his new fiancee. Must admit - drank too much wine, and woke up a little heavy headed, but I had such a good time. It was good to sit around and hear all the gory details of how Dan pulled off the engagement of the century.

Today (Sunday), I attended a baby shower for my good friend Vanessa. She's due at the start of April and she looks fabulous. All the wonderful gifts they received are really going to come in handy too. Only one duplicate gift and it's almost better they recieved it - as they have two cars and use for two mirrors.

I'm now home between it all and trying to relax a bit before having to go for a funeral wake for my old neighbour. Mr. Grimmer was a sweet slow moving old man when we lived next door to him and that was over 6 years ago. As we were neighbours for over 20 years, I should go and pay my respects to him and his wonderful wife.

Hard to believe it's all happening in one weekend - but at least after Friday night and Saturday morning next weekend I can finally slow down!

The Bachelor Finale - Live on my blog!

I'm sitting in my room watching the Bachelor. I thought it'd be fun to share my thoughts as the show progresses.

I've been watching The Bachelor pretty much all season. I don't know what it is about this season, but I am so hopeful that he picks the right girl. I don't know what it is, but I've had a clear favourite right form the start.

Melissa.

She's 25 - cute as a button, from Dallas and really likes kids. There's been something about her energy and enthusiasm and the way she's put herself out there right from the beginning. I've been rooting for her from day one. (She's the one in the red)

This episode started off with the meeting of Ty - Jason(the bachelor)'s son. He's a cutie patootie and really has a lot of enthusiasm. He's very much like his Dad and a very key ingredient in who Jason is going to pick.

Melissa met Ty and they were telling jokes and talking and it wasn't like she was talking down to him. She was talking to him and with him and they really got along. It was really sweet to see. And then we she met the family I think they also got caught up in the way that Melissa looks at Jason and the sparkle in Jason's eye as he talked about her. I'm going to be shocked if I'm wrong about the prediction.

Then again - Melissa did the ultimate no-no on this show. Well, she didn't - but her parents did. When they get down to the bottom four girls they are supposed to introduce the Bachelor to the parents. Many parents are really tough, some are goofy and others have gone so far as to ignore the guy in their house. Melissa's parents decided to not meet him. They didn't want to be on tv. They wanted it to be a private meeting where they can truly talk about things. I have to say that I respect that.

Now here comes Molly. (in green) She's cute too - but to me, seems a little immature. She's currently walking down the beach to meet Ty and her voice cracked when she talked about meeting him. She was really nervous. As Jason just said "Molly's never been around kids that much." So things have warmed up, but I do feel that Jason has been prodding Molly and walking her along and trying to get her and Ty to warm up to each other. I'm still not sold that she's the best woman for him.

That's what I hate about these shows. No matter how much you think that someone's awesome and how you think that you can see the chemistry - you aren't the one who gets to make the decision.

Okay - show's back on and the family is grilling Molly. When she's nervous and people are asking her questions, I've noticed that her eyebrows go up. It's like "Trust me see, my eyebrows are up, you have to believe me." Maybe that's what it is about her that I haven't really liked.

So they are saying that Molly is more career oriented. I think that they are having a harder time with her than with Melissa. It's tough for him to choose but is Molly in it to win it, or is she really in it to love him and have him beyond this show. ooh they just said the best thing "Is she the right piece of the puzzle?"

With tears in his eyes he told his mother "I said from early on that I can not let Molly go and then I'd say I will never let Melissa go."

The whole family sees how torn he is, but it was nice to have his brother there to say "She has the spark in her eyes that I've seen with you when you have those feelings for people you love." He totally had a sparkle in his eyes with Melissa and not so much with Molly. I have to wonder if it's an attraction or a longer term thing.

ooh - sexy last chance dates for the girls!

Uh oh - Diana the last bachelor came on the show. She actually dumped Jason as he proposed to her and she's the one that made him leery to try again.

Shows back - Melissa has called her mother and told her that she told Jason she loves him. "This whole thing is so much bigger than I thought it would be." She's in love with him and it shows. She's trying to get her parents to talk to him on the phone. She's in tears about the whole thing. I hope that they listened to her.

Now they are taking this crazy boat tour. It was supposed to be beautiful but instead the rain is pouring down. They decided to jump off the boat and go swimming. That's hilarious! The water is freezing.... Lol! See he can't do crazy crap like that with Molly!

Wow - her parents want to talk to him. That's huge. I hope that it goes well and I hope he asks them if he can marry their daughter! Again - Melissa is fantastic and I really hope that they end up together. But there are two different After the Rose Ceremony shows tonight. What's that all about? I mean - two after shows? Something huge must happen tonight. So not good. I hope he picks well....

So now Molly gets her date and she's crazy for him. She wants to be with him. I can see that. She made a book that has all the stuff about how they got together. It's very cute. Almost wish I could've done that for James!

I'm agonizing now as it really could go either way. I've always found with this show that my favourite is usually passed by. It's probably for the better in their case but still. Guess this is the chance you take when you join reality tv!
